Because the Bill Pickett stamp on this Legends of the West sheet depicts, instead, a cousin or brother of the cowboy, the U.S. Post Office Department recalled supplies of the sheet that had been distriuted to local post ofrfices in advance of the intended first day. Of more than 5.2 million sheets that had been sent to 500 locations, about 180 sheets had previously been sold, and some used on letters and packages. A new version of the sheet with a correct portraitof Bill Pickett, was prepared and went on sale October 18, 1994. Rather than destroy all of the misprinted Legends sheets that already had been printed. the UsPs offered by mail 150,000 of the recalled ones. The price was $8.70 per sheet.
